Postdoc Opening

Affiliation
Section of Infections of the Nervous System
Position Type
Postdoctoral Fellowship
Description

The goal of The Section of Infections of the Nervous System is to understand how, through the process of evolution, the brain adapts to the invasion by viruses and if failure of this adaptation leads to neurological diseases. In particular, we study the role of endogenous retroviruses in brain development and function and how their dysregulation leads to neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. We also have a program on studying the mechanisms by which HIV adapts to the brain to establish a reservoir and the role of defective viral sequences in viral neuropathogenesis. Via the study of these mechanisms we aim to identify new biomarkers for these diseases and identify new therapeutic targets.

A postdoctoral fellow is sought who has expertise in retrovirology and knowledge of bioinformatics. In our lab there is flexibility to develop a unique research training program of mutual benefit that the trainee can use to launch their own independent career. The trainee will have access to a wide range of cutting edge technology, biological specimens and in vitro and in vivo model systems to explore some of the most critical questions and open new areas of investigation as they relate to retroviral elements and brain function in healthy and diseased conditions.

A strong background in virology/retrovirology is required. Experience or knowledge of techniques in neuroscience and bioinformatics is preferable.
