In addition to these NIH intramural award programs, trainees are encouraged to apply for additional competitive award programs, fellowships, and grants, which are listed below.
Trainees can apply for fellowships or grants to support their education, training, and specific research projects. These opportunities can also help trainees transition into independent positions. That said, often these terms are used interchangeably, and a grant's title might even include the word fellowship!
We encourage all fellows to practice applying for grants to support their research projects. This is an acquired skill that takes ample practice and patience. Developing grant writing skills is an important component to your research training.
