Shareena A. Rahman, M.D., joined NINDS in 2020 as a Staff Clinician in the Electroencephalography (EEG) Section within the Office of the Clinical Director. In addition to EEG consultations, Dr. Rahman is also responsible for the clinical and educational management of the Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy Sections. She completed her undergraduate education at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and thereafter obtained her medical training (M.D.) at University of Virginia, School of Medicine in 2015. Dr. Rahman trained in internal medicine for internship and completed her neurology residency training at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. While at Duke, she received the prestigious Appleseed Teaching Award and created an institutional algorithm to address hospital wide challenges in treating status epilepticus. Her fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology, with primary focus on EEG, was also completed at Duke University Hospital. During her fellowship, she worked on source localization techniques of both normal and abnormal EEG waveforms.

 

Dr. Rahman's research interests and focus include education in neurology; assessing quality of life in epilepsy patients related to depression, anxiety, medication side effects, driving & employment status, and sleep impairment; the art of surgical epilepsy; improving the interpretation and standardization of ictal EEG onset patterns for both scalp and intracranial evaluations; strategies for management of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES).
