Dr. van Gelderen received a M.Sc. in Physics in 1988, and a Ph.D. in 1993, both at the University of Technology in Delft, The Netherlands, in the group of Prof Mehlkopf. The master thesis was on volume selection methods in MR spectroscopy, the Ph.D. thesis on diffusion techniques in MRI. Part of his Ph.D. research was performed at NIH, in the InVivoNMR-Center, then part of NCRR, with Dr. Moonen. Dr. van Gelderen continued at the NMR-Center as a postdoc in 1993, and a visiting associate in 1996. In 1999, he became a Staff Scientist in NIMH with Dr. Bandettini, and a Staff Scientist with Dr. Duyn in NINDS with the establishment of the AMRI group.

MRI is a complex imaging modality with a large number of ways to acquire images and add contrasts based on anatomical structure or physiology. Detailed understanding of imaging physics linking the biology to the resulting image contrast results in improved imaging technology and allows for a better interpretation of the resulting information. Both image quality and the understanding of the available contrasts help to advance our knowledge of brain function and the diagnostic value of MRI. We have focused on brain imaging at increasingly higher field strength, the magnetic properties of brain tissue and various physiological processes influencing the MR signal.
