Dr. John Lynch is a Staff Clinician in the Section on Stroke Diagnostics and Therapeutics, NINDS and  the Director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program. He received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences, College of Medicine in Kansas City, MO, and completed his internship and residency in Neurology at Northwestern University. After residency, he completed a fellowship in vascular neurology, and a Master’s in Public Health in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from Yale University. In 1998, Dr. Lynch joined the Neuroepidemiology Branch in NINDS as a Senior Staff Fellow. His research focused on risk factors for stroke in infants and children. In 2005, Dr. Lynch was appointed to Program Director in the Office of Minority Health and Research, in the extramural program at NINDS. During this period, Dr. Lynch directed the development of specialized neuroscience research programs (SNRP) at Minority serving institutions throughout the United States. In 2009, Dr. Lynch joined the Section on Stroke Diagnostics and Therapeutics, NINDS as a Staff Clinician. Dr. Lynch is the director of the ACGME Vascular Neurology fellowship program at NIH. He is board certified in both Neurology and Vascular Neurology. Dr. Lynch’s research interests include stroke in women and children, and MR imaging in stroke.

The Section on Stroke Diagnostics and Therapeutics conducts clinical research related to understanding human stroke pathophysiology, and to evaluate novel stroke diagnostic and therapeutic strategies using MRI. The NIH Stroke program is a collaboration between the NIH, Suburban Hospital (Johns Hopkins Medicine), and Medstar Washington Hospital Center. The NIH stroke program consists of an emergency response team and inpatient service staffed by neurologists, nurses, and researchers specializing in stroke and a research infrastructure centered around acute stroke imaging with MRI.
