Symposium: Smithfest: Celebration of Dr. Jeffrey Smith's Pioneering Career

Friday, December 09, 2022 | 10:00 - 4:30 PM

The NINDS invites you to a symposium focusing on the neural origins of respiratory movements in the mammalian central nervous system to celebrate the pioneering career and scientific contributions of Jeffrey Smith, Ph.D., Chief of the Cellular and Systems Neurobiology Section in the Basic Neuroscience Program of NINDS. Dr. Smith is retiring at the end of the year after nearly three decades of distinguished service at NINDS/NIH and a professional career in neuroscience spanning four decades. The agenda includes talks by close colleagues covering areas from Dr. Smith’s and the speakers’ groundbreaking experimental and computational modeling studies on the organization and operation of brainstem respiratory cells and circuits, the brainstem origin of respiratory rhythm, and the neural mechanisms of respiratory homeostasis and motor control.
