The Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Unit (NDRU), part of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow in neurogenetics.
Laboratory description: The NDRU, headed by Dr. Sonja Scholz, is a leading genetics laboratory within the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, USA. As part of this world-class research environment, we have access to cutting-edge sequencing technologies and offer extensive expertise in genome analysis and human genetics.
Our mission and long-term goals focus on understanding the genetic changes that influence the risk of developing complex neurodegenerative diseases, such as Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and frontotemporal dementia (see for example Chia R. et al., Nature Genetics, 2021; Dewan R. et al., Neuron, 2021; Kaivola K. et al., Brain, 2021). We also aim to use genetic knowledge for the development of novel ancillary diagnostic tools. We specialize in applying modern gene discovery technologies, including genome-wide association testing, genome sequencing, and functional genomic data integration. Fellowship description: We are searching for a highly collaborative and inquisitive scientist to join our team. The post-holder is expected to perform analyses of genomic data to support a variety of bioinformatic research projects. Eligible applicants should demonstrate critical-thinking skills to interpret large genomic data sets and assist other team members in the design of wet-lab experiments. The post-holder is expected to demonstrate success in sharing scientific information, through the writing of scientific manuscripts, mentoring of team members and oral presentations at seminars and conferences. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the genetics of neurological diseases.
- Ph.D. or M.D. (or M.D., Ph.D.) in a relevant life science discipline
- Experience with classical statistics
- Experience in data visualization
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in analyzing next-generation genomic data
- Knowledge and experience in bioinformatic programming using Linux, R, or Python
- Ability to analyze GWAS and next-generation sequence data sets
- Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work as part of a team is essential
